A Birthday Fishing Adventure We’ll Never Forget

Some birthdays deserve more than cake.
This one deserved open water, bent rods, and a deck full of fish.

Our family has fished for years, but it had been a long time since we’d gone deep sea. When our grandson turned 10 and told us fishing was the thing he loved most in the world, we knew exactly what to do. We decided to turn his birthday into a full-on adventure.

We used the Fishing Booker app to explore options and were surprised by how many great charters were available, both out of Oceanside Harbor and San Diego. After looking through boats, reviews, and availability, we chose the Fin Runner out of San Diego and booked a trip with Captain Brian.

From the start, the experience felt right.

Captain Brian kept a close eye on the weather, waited until conditions cleared, and then took us out. As soon as the poles hit the water, we caught three bonita almost immediately. Any nerves we had disappeared in seconds. This wasn’t going to be one of those long, quiet days drifting with no action. This was a catching day.

We made about a 45-minute run down into Mexican waters, which requires both a California and Mexican fishing license for this trip. Totally worth it.

Fish after fish came over the rail. Bonita, rockfish, red snapper, sheephead, lingcod, and even some sculpin. Our grandson was absolutely ecstatic, and honestly, so were we. Captain Brian was incredibly patient, helpful, and genuinely excited to see everyone on board having success. He knew the water, knew the fish, and knew how to make the experience fun for all ages.

On the way back to the dock, Brian cleaned all the fish for us, and we headed home with a cooler full of beautiful, fresh fillets. That night, we cooked everything up together.

The surprise favorite? Sheephead. We’d never tried it before and learned it’s often called “the poor man’s lobster.” Mild, juicy, and absolutely delicious.

By the end of the day, it was clear this wasn’t just a fishing trip. It was one of those experiences that becomes part of family lore. The kind you talk about years later.

We can’t say enough good things about Captain Brian, the Fin Runner, or Fishing Booker. This won’t be our last trip. Not even close.

If you’re thinking about booking a fishing adventure, especially with kids, do it. The fish are great, but the memories are even better.
